The United Auto Workers union (UAW) has announced a tentative agreement with Stellantis that could bring an end to the month-long strike. The agreement includes new safety standards for workers, additional full-time jobs, and pay raises for temporary and part-time workers.
The agreement also includes the creation of a Technology Center at Stellantis where members of the UAW will have an active role in helping to develop cutting edge technology. The center will be modeled after similar technology centers that exist within other automakers, and the UAW believes it will provide a more progressive approach to relations between labor and management.
The agreement also includes provisions for temporary and part-time workers, who will be eligible for the same wage increases made to full-time workers. UAW president Rory Gamble believes that the agreement is a major step forward for workers, stating, This tentative agreement is a win for Stellantis workers and a win for all workers who dream of an improved future with good wages, competitive benefits and job security. This agreement upholds the UAW’s commitment to providing our members with the best wages, benefits and working conditions possible.
The agreement will need to be ratified by both parties, but if successful the strike will end and workers will return to work. This would bring an end to the month-long dispute, which has seen thousands of workers protest and walk picket lines in an effort to get their voices heard. With a successful resolution to the strike, another major hurdle has been cleared in the auto industry’s shift to a more progressive and fair relationship between labor and management.
