Donald Trump’s public image has certainly taken unexpected turns over the years, with some perceiving him as the renegade outsider, and others courting his disruption of the system. But as of late, Trump’s public image has begun to steadily improve, prompting speculation of whether this is due to the nation’s collective amnesia of his controversial decisions, or a newfound approval.
It certainly could be argued that Americans have collectively forgotten the tumult of Trump’s policies, with a recent Gallup poll showing that he has a 48% approval rating. This number is up 4 percent in just one year, and 9 percent higher than when he was elected in 2016. But other factors could be responsible for the improved perception of the former President, including the simple adage that even the most controversial of politicians have their fans.
The widespread disapprovail of Trump’s policy decisions has been well documented, yet it appears that many of those who oppose his politics have softened their stance and begun to view him with a more nuanced perspective. Even though Trump still holds a reputation as someone who is brash, outspoken, and prone to gaffes, he also appears to be gaining a degree of credibility as a successful businessman. His focus on deregulation, tax cuts, and trade negotiations has earned the respect of many on both sides of the aisle, and helped to improve his image.
Yet it is the humanization of Trump, and the recognition of him as a father and grandfather, that has possibly had the strongest impact on his improved image. To many, Trump is no longer the persona of an erratic, overly theatrical leader, but rather a man capable of growth and insight. As such, he appears to be gaining in popularity with Americans who may not necessarily agree with his policies, but appreciate the skills and qualities he brings to the office of the President.
Simply put, it appears that the American people may be in the midst of a reassessment of Trump, and whether it is due to the nation’s collective amnesia or newfound approval remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Trump’s improved image is something to be observed and monitored for the benefit of the country.
