Hunter Biden, the son of the US President and his chief advisor, has been indicted on false statement charges regarding the purchase of a firearm in Delaware.
The indictment, which was announced on Wednesday, claims that Biden falsely told the Delaware State Police Firearms Transaction Center that he had not been convicted of a crime when he purchased the firearm in October. However, a review of his records showed that Biden had been convicted of a felony drug offense in the state of Arkansas in October 2019.
Under Delaware law, individuals convicted of an offense punishable by imprisonment greater than one year are ineligible to purchase a firearm.
The indictment states that Biden’s false statements deprived the State of Delaware of its right to participate in the Firearms Transaction Center’s pre-purchase review process. Thus, his actions are charged with a Class G Felony, which carries a potential sentence of up to two years of imprisonment and/or a fine of up to $3,000.
Biden’s legal team dismissed the allegation of the false statement as ‘completely baseless’. They added that Biden was unaware of the law in question and that he was exercising his second amendment rights when purchasing the firearm.
The indictment comes amidst the FBI’s ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden’s business dealings with China. This investigation has already yielded evidence revealing that Biden received a large sum of money from Chinese firms.
It is unclear how this indictment will affect the ongoing investigation or whether additional charges will be brought against Biden in connection with the other allegations.
At the moment, the Biden legal team has not made any statements regarding the indictment or its potential effect on the investigation.
