It is with profound sadness that the nation of Israel has announced that Assaf Bitton, the son of former Defense Ministry Minister of Strategic Affairs Moshe Ya’alon, has been killed in conflict with Palestinian militants in Gaza. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), troops encountered an exchange of gunfire with Hamas militants on May 30th that resulted in the fatal wounding of Corporal Assaf Bitton. Bitton was serving as an NCO in the 51st Battalion of the Golani Brigade at the time of his death.
Moshe Ya’alon was the Defense Minister from 2013 to 2016 and his son had served in the Golani Brigade since 2016 when he enlisted. Following the news of his son’s death, Ya’alon said it is naturally a heavy and difficult day for us, and expressed his gratitude to the IDF for their commitment in protecting Israel.
The IDF released a statement of condolence saying they will remember Corporal Bitton’s bravery and dedication to Israel and its people. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his condolences to both Moshe Ya’alon and his wife, tweeting, Our hearts are with you at this difficult time.
The death of Assaf Bitton marks a tragic reminder of the risks taken by soldiers to protect their country. While countries cannot exist without borders, it is the brave sons and daughters of Israel who are called upon to defend them. Our hearts go out to the Bitton family, and all who have lost their lives in the struggle for peace. May their memories be a blessing.
