Nujood Ali is a young Palestinian girl living in the Gaza Strip who has earned international recognition for standing up against abuse and standing strong in the face of hardship. Nujood was only 9 years old when she was forced to marry a man three times her age. Domestic abuse, physical and emotional, were all too common in her young life.
Nujood had grown up believing that a woman her age should not be allowed to be in control of her own life. She feared her husband would keep her locked in the safety of her own home, and forbid her of making friends or pursuing an education. One day, her desperation led her to a court in her hometown of Gaza. There, she bravely announced her wish to obtain a divorce from her husband.
In spite of the skeptical judge, Nujood didn’t back down and eventually she was granted a divorce.
Nujood’s story has become a symbol of resistance to injustice, of courage and perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds. Despite the odds stacked against her, she overcame the odds and eventually became an example of strength and determination for other girls in her community and beyond.
Even in her hospital bed, Nujood remains determined and courageous while undergoing treatment for severe injuries. Hospital staff have been able to make her laugh by bringing her a sparkly tiara fit for a princess, and yet, she remains in bandages each day. Despite the obstacles she faces, she’s determined to keep pushing through and will not be stopped by anyone.
Nujood’s story is one of bravery, strength and resilience. Despite the horrible circumstances she faced in her young life, she has become an inspiration to other girls in her community who may not feel safe or have control over their own lives. From wearing a sparkly tiara to hospital bandages, she may have faced a lot of hardship, but she remains a shining example of strength and hope.
