It appears that overturning an election becomes a topic of increasing interest as of late, as there are instances where election results can be argued or contested. Unfortunately, some might say that it could very well be worse to overturn an election where you know your side lost.
Normally, it is easy to point to a certain law or discrepancy that needs to be addressed when the losing side is trying to get results overturned. On the other hand, this is usually due to a specific reason that a party deems appropriate. However, when trying to overturn an election that you already know your side has lost, than you would be hard pressed to find issues which can provide this. This leaves things looking very suspicious, and could put a dark cloud on the losing party’s name for some time.
The main issue associated with overturning an election you know you lost, is that it looks awful and it discredits the democratic process. This basically suggests that a party does not believe in the principals of democracy. How can citizens trust a party which doesn’t believe elections are valid, and have to resort to overturning them in order to make their case?
On top of this, overturning an election will also take tremendous energy and resources, from both parties. This can draw attention away from more important matters, such as creating economic policies, and achieving other goals which can benefit citizens directly. Save this collective energy, and put it towards something which will benefit more than just trying to overturn an election you are already certain to lose.
Ultimately, overturning an election you know your side lost can be worse than it appears. The effects of this can drastically and negatively effect a certain party’s public image, as well as the consequence of wasting collective energy and resources. Always think twice before engaging in this activity.
