Two former Georgia poll workers have filed another lawsuit against attorney Rudolph Giuliani after he defamed them in the heat of the 2020 presidential elections. The two men, which have already been awarded a record $148 million judgement for their first defamation suit against Giuliani, are seeking more damages, citing the way the former New York Mayor has continued to disparage them for simply doing their jobs.
The original lawsuit was filed in December of 2020 after Giuliani publicly accused the men of bribery as he attempted to dispute the results of the election. While the bribery allegations were unfounded, it was enough to spark widespread rumors, resulting in death threats against the two men and their families. In February of 2021, the two former workers won the landmark $148 million judgement against Giuliani after a jury determined he had acted with malicious intent in making the false accusations of bribery.
In their new suit, the two workers, State Court Judge Brandon Cogburn and mathematician Thy wise, are looking for an even larger award from Giuliani. This suit follows after Giuliani’s frequent public appearances where he continues to smear the two men’s character.
Giuliani has continuously maintained his innocence, claiming that his statements were not meant as actual accusations of criminal behavior but that he was simply “exercising his right to free speech.” It will be up to the court to determine if Giuliani’s continued slander is done with malice, and if the former Mayor must face additional consequences for his actions.
