WWE’s SmackDown is returning to NBCUniversal’s USA Network in a deal worth more than $1.4 billion. The agreement brings the long-running wrestling franchise back to its original home, after being on Fox since 2019.
USA Network and Fox acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast WWE SmackDown in 2018 in a five-year deal worth more than $1 billion. The much-anticipated return of the iconic show is evidence of the professional wrestling promotion’s recent resurgence and continued global popularity.
The creative force behind WWE events, Vince McMahon, was behind the move. Mr. McMahon commented that “SmackDown’s return to USA Network is an exciting moment for the WWE Universe, our partners and our fans. USA Network will bring the best in entertainment and provide a platform for SmackDown that will enable us to continue to grow within the NBCU family.”
The renewal deal also includes an extension of USA Network’s streaming offerings — Universe Now and USA Now — as well as extensive marketing support across NBCUniversal’s channels. USA Network, an NBCUniversal-owned cable channel, is home to several popular series and live sports programming, which will now include SmackDown Live’s Tuesday night broadcast.
The new agreement is indicative of WWE’s continued success in the entertainment industry. This is a huge win for the wrestling promotion, as the value of the SmackDown show remains incredibly strong and merchandise sales remain robust. With the extended deal, fans can be sure to enjoy even more hours of world-class wrestling action on USA Network.
